It’s been some time since I posted… It’s just been a bit crazy with this hurricane and all. I had to keep in touch with Jamaica and find out how they were doing. Made me think about posting about hurricane fears now that it is over. As islanders there is a lot we learn about natural disasters and such.
So my post is 3 things to do if you find yourself in a hurricane or a really bad storm.
1. Keep your kids close to you. Really close. This sounds obvious no? But I mean all in one bed or one room. A hurricane usually comes in the night so it feels really scary. When you are together you can talk without shouting, wrap your arms around the weaker ones, smile when the going seems rough and for those who pray, all pray together out loud.
2. Try and go to sleep. Not as crazy as it seems. When you are confident that what you are doing is right and you are all together and protected , you become more calm. As you talk calm thoughts you can go to sleep. I have done it with a category 5 hurricane Gilbert with winds reaching 175 miles per hour. Gilbert devastated Jamaica. My children were both preschooler age and slept right through it. We parents, woke up during the eye to open windows on the other side of the house. Then back to sleep. In the morning a huge main beam from the house next door lay resplendent in our yard just a few meters away from the side of the house. Our house was unscathed.
3. This one is for those who believe in a Higher Presence. Take time to acknowledge His Goodness and His Mercy. It doesn’t take much time but it sure makes you feel better, calmer and more in tune with what you know is right
4. Reality. Before the hurricane and during the hurricane, check that the windows are properly closed/ locked and boarded up and nothing is flapping loose. There is no leak under the doors. Check that your roof is okay when the eye is passing over. This is for those with not so fancy houses and the roof might loose its shingles or zinc.
Thats’ the 4 things to if you find yourself in a hurricane or really bad storm and remember keep together and really close. Keeping close means hurricane fears are much much less
