History Behind the Marcus Garvey In Schools

The decision to begin at the Basic School level is based on the fact that in every culture, there is a dynamic relationship between hereditary and the environment. This daily relationship is the foundation of growth and development.

The MGIS is guided by an Advisory Council under the Chairmanship of Major Effiom B. Whyte. The Council brings together not only educationalists but also Garveyites and well wishers from different walks of life. Garvey’s well-known quote tells the world why the Council does what it does.

“Never forget that intelligence rules the world and ignorance carries the burden. Therefore, remove yourself as far from ignorance as possible and seek as far as possible to be intelligent.” - Marcus Garvey

As parents and historians, this is really history in the making
MGIS heralds a new age as we learn with pride from our own ancient and present history.

Marcus Teaches Us

Marcus Teaches Us explains the philosophy of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the internationally well-known, revered Black philosopher. It uses simple language for kids 6-9 years of age. So many activities and stunning information-filled full-color spreads! They bring to life the contributions of other Black influencers and People of Color up to the present.

Eleanor Wint co-authors this children’s biography with a 9 year old who is eloquent and knowledgeable about Marcus Garvey. His name is Annu Yah Kadhi Stewart. He even has his own You Tube channel as “Star Seed Annu Talks”.

Between 1923 and 1940, Garvey influenced leaders and potential leaders of developing countries, to become independent of colonial rule. Garvey’s philosophy is built on racial liberation, self-empowerment and a Black homeland in Africa.

Written for kids, Marcus Teaches Us that “You too can impact Black history”.
