As his earth day draws near, the 3rd edition of the kids Book Marcus Teaches Us, is the catalyst for remembering this great philosopher Marcus Garvey. This post reflects on his teachings between 1887 and 2020.
I write about Garvey simply because he stresses that each person must have a strong sense of identity if he or she is to become a successful person.
Garvey built his philosophy around respect and honoring of people who loved and realized their African historical and racial roots. At the same time he was a pragmatist. You can see him changing with the times and learning more every day about how economics really works in capitalist societies.
He also experienced first hand in his travels, the lengths to which the world will go to strengthen lying, negative generalizations and stereotypes.
I know Marcus Garvey today would understand weaknesses in our thinking as we try to hold onto what is right. So let us not fall into the trap of jumping to conclusions about each other as we hear rumors.
Or preferring to say “Oh I am so useless., I am nobody because I am black’ rather than
“It’s good to be alive in these days with all the opportunities to chose from ”
or I am a beautiful child of God. I am someone special”, and in this way attract all the positives that finally are being freed into the universe.
Whether we are on an island or on a continent, at home or abroad, saying we are Black has little meaning . It all depends on the people around us, the people who we want to or choose to be with. The people who contribute to our way of seeing the world.
That’s why Marcus Garvey must be important to us. So we know our history and develop a way of thinking that helps us to tell our children one truth. Our African historical and racial roots have and will continue to rule the minds and emotions of men.
This coronavirus pandemic is teaching us a great deal about ourselves as human beings. Every one tries to feel some sense of responsibility for others especially those fighting to keep life going. Knowing our culture and our historical advance/contributions to where we are now, simply helps to make us feel proud of who we are. In this way we can reach out to others more humanely and without having to consider their color.
So in anticipation of Marcus Garvey’s birthday, I send you to take a look at the Facebook page which has lots of posts. Let’s increase our knowledge.
I wrote this in 2020. It still holds true in 2021 in this the month when we remember all the great acheivements of our anscetors. Black people do not dwell on the horrors of the past. Over 3 million people died in the sea in the Middle Passage. We live for now.
